Crook County restaurants upset after missing return to indoor dining by 1 COVID case

PRINEVILLE, Ore. (KTVZ) -- On Tuesday, Gov. Kate Brown announced that 10 Oregon counties had moved from the Extreme Risk category to High Risk, allowing them to resume limited indoor dining, entertainment and recreational activities starting Friday.

Crook County however was not one of the counites cleared in opening up its businesses indoors, all due to just one COVID-19 case -- a total of 60 over two weeks, when the limit for mid-sized counties is 59.

And that close call upset some businesses even more than before -- so much that some put out large signs that read "Brown You're Killing Me."

"We were totally in shock. There’s no way we saw this coming,” said Jim Roths, the owner of Club Pioneer and Dillon's Grill in Prineville.

Roths said the governor needs to re-evaluate the guidance the Oregon Health Authority has in place, because he believes that there is not a one-size-fits-all system in reopening guidelines.

"I think the county has been doing everything it can," he said. "I think what needs to change is our governor needs to re-look at this metric system and see how it fits each community. Come down here, walk our streets. We're a small rural community here. It is safe to be in Prineville."

Crook County Judge Seth Crawford also urged the governor to consider letting county businesses reopen.

"We as a county have done a really good job in getting money out to the community," Crawford said. "But the people of Cook County don't want money from the government. They want to be able to work. They want to be able to take care of their customers and be a productive member of our community and the rest of our country."

Other business owners share the same frustration. Shelly Nelson was expecting to have Sons and Beers, one of the two restaurants she manages, open up as well.

“This weekend, we are supposed to be getting hit with snow," Nelson said. “We were looking forward to having that 25% capacity inside. And then, of course, when we didn't get lowered, there's not really going to be a lot of people out there in the cold, in the snow, who are going to be here to support us."

It will be another two weeks before Oregon counties will get reevaluated, to see if their risk levels can improve.

  1. “I think what needs to change is our governor”…. Whoa ! Stop right there Jimbo ! You just nailed it ! Mass outbreaks in Bend are now shutting down schools- Crook gets a visitor in from Da-Shoots- who infects the place-the patrons- the locals… and Crook is punished for it ! I’ll say it again… get a phylagen test for $150 bucks test yer place for 2 weeks- send the results in to OSHA- and open your doors !

      1. Do you have income? Have you been sent to collections? Are you facing bankruptcy? Are you about to lose your home and live on the street? Are your children starving? Do you have heat? Do you have gas in your vehicle so you don’t have to walk in the snow? Have some consideration outside your closed minded opinion and recognize how ridiculous it is to keep people from opening their business by ONE case! These people are not “sore losers”, they have simply LOST everything to survive!

        1. And there would have been many more lost LIVES by letting everyone stay open. It’s not about being open or not. It’s about keeping people from dying. You may think that having businesses shut down is bad, but our numbers are low because we stick to these measures. Keeping a business open is not worth the risk of making people sick. In the future, it would be wise to create the correct jobs so these businesses can keep doing their business without the need for in person interaction. Failure to adjust to the time is what’s really making these businesses fail. When peoples lives are put at risk simply to stay open, it’s not worth it. And if the only argument you have is that our numbers are low, opening until we have a method to keep the numbers low other than wearing mask and staying inside is just wishful thinking at best and could cause lives to be lost at worse. This is a pandemic.

  2. Here’s an interesting discussion on another thread- that is really more valid over here- “Mr. Lerten has once again stepped into a bear trap with no way out but to face the fact- that he’s been caught- caught in another bigly lie promoted by the OHA and Kovid Kate Brown… So here are the facts in relation to this post from good Ol Barney- The Oregon Health Authority’s county risk classifications are based on the rate of cases per 100,000 over 14 days, the number of cases over that 2-week period and the test positivity rate. Ya know, data, facts”…. Gawd how I love the sell there at the end… “Ya know, data, facts” ! Beautiful Barn ! Now if I may… according to your OHA website that anyone can look at and confirm for themselves (including you)- here’s your link- https://public.tableau.com/profile/oregon.health.authority.covid.19#!/vizhome/shared/SSZMGR77Z …. And here’s your inescapable trap ! According to the data posted- Lake County- 35 confirmed or presumed cases- 433 cases per 100k- 10% test positivity rate- equals a well earned “Moderate Rating”…. But for Crook County- with 60 confirmed or “presumptive” case- 256 cases per 100k- and 7.2% Test positivity rate… gets an Extreme Risk ranking !!! How is that possible that Crook County has 2 “proven” lower scores out of the three than Lake County- but is still considered “Extreme Risk” By Dictator Brown ? Nobody has said anything about how these categories are weighted- so they must be on equal terms ! So again- the only category where Crook is higher is with “presumptions” ! I know it’s late in the day- and Mr. B usually floods this site with my comments late at night- knowing that they will be long gone by morning… but not this time ! I’m gonna keep repeating this data till he admits he’s not been telling you all the truth about Kovd Kate’s Hoax !

  3. Refusing to follow basic COVID precautions may have bit the whole town in the rear. Being in a smaller community, if the metrics were addressed Prineville may be in worse shape. They are still over the number with a smaller population. Careful what you ask for.

    1. Yeah they have only themselves to blame. If the citizens of Prineville took the situation as serious as people in Bend did, and knocked of the “will not comply” nonsense and wore their masks, etc., they’d probably have been able to open up on Friday.

      1. Excuse you! If you don’t live here, how the hell would you know what people have done? You can’t judge the whole county by the actions of a few idiots! We have been wearing double masks to even walk the dog. Step off your high and mighty BEND pedestal, you can’t even type a coherent sentence that makes sense.

  4. Maybe if everyone would take the pandemic seriously and make an effort to protect themselves and others, they would be able to open up more too. Wash up, cover up, keep your distance. Not hard, huh?

    1. Go in either of the gun shops in Pee-tucky to see this on full display. Zero employees or customers wearing masks despite the “Masks Required” signs on the door. Good ol’ boys indeed, gonna shoot the virus with their guns!

    2. Really? Crook County has a higher high school graduation rate than Bend. Not to mention the vast majority of our community happen to hold a 4 year degree, Master’s, or Doctorate. Do you have that level of intelligence ‘Good-ol-tool’?

  5. Remember the 1st “Did you accidentally kill someone today” commercial? The stupidity of that ad pales to comparison of where we are today. Take the 3 west coast governors and all the educated with “cism” degrees and put their collective common sense under an electron microscope. There would be a blank screen on the readout when powered up. BTW. I am seeking investors for an electric hot air balloon. Tell all your friends!

    1. and the prineville mayor saying on new years day businesses should open up at last check the bend mayor has kept quiet. I know some on here think i was certifiable for saying that she wont like mayors pleading with her as she sees herself as our saviour.

    1. Crook County did not vote for either of those people. We are conservative patriotic Americans caught up in the crossfire from an invasion of Liberal Californians that took over our beloved State. We’re the victims here!

  6. Excuse me “Laughing @ u”
I’ve seen more Idiots in Bend & Redmond without masks than Prineville! “Better than thou” attitude from Bend makes me sick

  7. 1 case didnt know it was that close but hope wont see on the news prineville lynch mob hunts down the covid case that costs them reopening. Saw deschutes was almost 40 cases yesterday after two days of just 5, that skyrockets more governor will only let us be open 2 weeks which would be convenient as the major storm front coming in this afternoon will be out by monday or so.

  8. Prineville residents, if you really want your restaurants back, make the small non harming sacrifice of covering your face with a harmless piece of cloth

  9. You might want to read this article in the WND………..”On its website, the CDC says, just 6% of the people counted as COVID-19 deaths died of COVID-19 alone.

The researchers estimated the COVID-19 recorded fatalities “are inflated nationwide by as much as 1600% above what they would be had the CDC used the 2003 handbooks,” said All Concerned Citizens.” Look it up Study finds CDC inflated COVID numbers by 1,600%
Concludes health authorities violated federal law.

  10. A perfect example of an unreasonable cold hearted high and mighty power drunk evil elitist witchcraft dictator completely removed from her Oregonian Citizens. Karma will catch up to her…

    1. Crook County has a lower Case Positivity Rate than Lake County. Lake is categorized as “Moderate Risk- Crook at Extreme”. There are only three measurable criteria out there (according to the site moderator) and Crook has lower numbers in two out of three- with the third being under the “presumed” category. Brown is not being challenged on this rating system by the media because she’s brow beat and snarled at these small markets who neglect their journalistic duties and instead cower in fear. This is why Americans feel the need to look to social media outlets like Fakebook for their information- the mainstream media is no longer trusted to provide accurate and timely news- a breakdown that occurred during the Obama administration- History books will reveal the true timeline of this collapse- and it was well before President Trump entered office.

        1. Case positivity rates are based on percentages- Case loads are based on population rates per 100,000 residents… none of this is based on population density or per square mile ! Even if you went down the road- you’d have a hard time explaining how a country the size of California- with half the US population- has a deaths per on million population at 54 (Japan) while Oregon sits at almost 500 ! Think about that the next time you feel the need to support Kate Brown’s failed hoax of a response to a mild virus ! What we now need to know- did she do the same horrific act as NY Governor Andrew Cuomo- and deliberately set out to inflate the pain suffering and death count like he did. What we now know- is that Sr Citizens were infected in the hospitals- and then sent home or back to nursing centers ! When I look at the OHA data- I have seen hundreds of times- where elderly people tested positive weeks before- then died in their homes- adding more evidence- that these people were infected “in” the hospitals and then sent out to spread the virus among the various populations ! Kate Brown must be investigated- just like Penn, Mich NY and Jersey !
