Monday, May. 25 National cemeteries host Memorial Day ceremonies – National Cemetery Administration commemorates Memorial Day with brief solemn wreath laying ceremonies at each VA national cemetery, accompanied by a moment of silence and the playing of ‘Taps’, although with the public unable to attend. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert Wilkie presides over the wreath laying at Quantico National Cemetery in Virginia, Acting Deputy Secretary Pamela Powers does so at Culpeper National Cemetery in Virginia, and Under Secretary for Memorial Affairs Randy Reeves is at Calverton National Cemetery in New York state * Other public events typically associated with Memorial Day at national cemeteries, including group placement of flags at gravesites, do not take place, although all VA national cemeteries are open all Memorial Day weekend from dawn to dusk for public visitation
