Trump deems houses of worship ‘essential’ amid pandemic, threatens to override governors

President Donald Trump announced Friday that his administration is issuing guidance deeming places of worship “essential” operations during the coronavirus pandemic, threatening to “override” governors if their states did not follow the new federal recommendations.

“Some governors have deemed liquor stores and abortion clinics essential, but have left our churches and houses of worship. It’s not right. So I’m correcting this injustice and calling houses of worship essential,” Trump said during his announcement at the White House.

The President said that at his direction, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will provide the guidance.

Trump said he was calling upon governors to “allow churches and places of worship to open right now.”

“If there’s any question, they’re going to have to call me, but they’re not going to be successful in that call,” Trump added.

“The governors need to do the right thing and allow these very important essential places of faith to open right now, this weekend. If they don’t do it, I will override the governors,” he continued.

A senior administration official told CNN that the guidance had been initially delayed because some officials believed the proposals were too detailed and would be impossible for churches and others to achieve. There was also talk of putting out no guidance at all on religious services, but Trump had conversations with CDC officials and urged them to issue something.

The White House coronavirus task force finalized the guidance during a meeting on Thursday, the source said.

The President referred to the conversations with CDC officials on Thursday, telling participants and the press at a listening session with African Americans, “I said, ‘You better put it out.’ ”

“I spoke to CDC today about churches. We’ve got to get our churches open. We’ve got to get our country open,” he said.

  1. Its too bad because several large outbreaks in the dozens have been traced to rural church functions, comrade president will be killing more of his own voters but will they notice or care, getting this sex offender a second term would be better than the rapture for some people sadly

        1. If you wanna look at the “best posts”- just scroll on by all these other dim-wits and lock your browser on BGHW… Simply the best !

    1. Hypocrite. You’re saying churches can’t take the same precautions as grocery stores or apparently “essential” liquor stores. Why don’t you get drunk which is apparently “essential” to liberals.

      1. LOL. Doesn’t God love all his children, even the liberals? Why’s it always about politics? I’m glad worship is back on. “Love thy neighbor” is a concept lost to so many, based in ideas and beliefs that politics deem one more worthy than another. In God’s words, we are all his children– or are we?

          1. Let me understand, you think I’m religious? You’ve got me all wrong. I thought it amusing to use words from Christian belief toward the before stated comment.

      2. The point is, a number of churches havent taken those precautions, and instead caused severe outbreaks in small towns least equipped to respond… which impacts all of us sadly

        1. And you think the businesses that were allowed to remain open were much better? Lol just go into Fred Meyer and see all the people not adhering to 6ft distance. Keep trying to grasp at straws because you saw CNN release a story about a church that had a few infections.

          1. Also, the only reason you are against this is because Trump is saying open up churches. If any democrat said it, you wouldn’t have said a word.

            1. It could also be that out of the 1000s of churches in Oregon a pathetic 10 of them descided the “good christian” thing to do was to sue!!! ROTFLMAO!!! So as you are probably used to, you are totally wrong.

Golf and a whore anyone!!! Big fat lyin donnie’s buyig!!! trump / kim 2020!! TRUE LOVE!!

            2. Its interesting timing to announce this as the quarantine is ending, like comrade president wants to take credit for something he didnt do, and simultaneously avoid responsibility for the inevitable rise in deaths it will cause

    2. Now just because you are a non believer doesn’t mean God doesn’t exist. There are more of us who bask in the knowledge of the existence of our lord. You can not and will not sway us from our houses of worship. Begone with yourself. You shall not overcome! May the Lord have mercy on you.

      1. if your faith is so strong, show some confidence in it, instead of displaying such silly behavior – did your higher power tell you to behave this way? – i haven’t seen directive for such behavior in the Bible, or any other religious book

      2. In history more people have died in the name of God then for any other reason. This isn’t even about God for your fearless leader. It’s about starting more crap In his continuing attempts to cover up the fact that he destroys everything he touches.

      3. Oh man. What you’re doing here is called “code switching.” Now that we’re talking about “God,” you suddenly start using “shall” and “begone” like you’ve been taught to say by the fraudulent preachers who perpetuate your superstitions.

        Christianity is a disaster.

  2. It must be Friday because here we go again. I believe it was established last time he tried to pull his ‘I am the King and I have all the power’ ploy that he does not have the Constitutional authority to override the governors. So put a mask on, social distance and go pray with your fellow assemblies in small groups. Although, I do not understand why it is essential to gather together to worship. Isn’t prayer something personal between you and your God?

    1. Feel free to go to your “essential” liquor store and in the words of liberals “put others at risk” so that you can get drunk which is apparently “essential”. Talk about being a hypocrite.

      1. Funny I don’t see anyone at the liquor store hugging and kissing or singing hymns.
The store I visit only allows 7 people in at a time, the staff are in masks, 6 foot distancing is marked on the floor and no one is sitting around in pews.

      2. The liquor stores were probably left open because the bars were closed and I can imagine how angry some people would be if they couldn’t get their Jim Beam. I think you inadvertently focused in on the wrong group there with your liquored up talk.

        1. so, you’re hanging around a dispensary singing songs, shaking hands, hugging and such – do you behave that way in Fred Meyer too? – this stuff is got to be really confusing for you

  3. Nooooooooo!!! Pray at home,. You are not going to pass it to each other, you are going out and passing it to me, Our Elks lodge closed before all the big shutdowns started because of the general age of a lot of our members and we are very social. Smartest thing we did. We have had no one die. And, we all miss each other.

    1. being together and not being isolated is pretty essential.. I have a friend who doesn’t have access to the internet.. and hardly any friends in Madras. Church was the place where he could be with others.

      1. So give him a mask and don’t hug each other. A little ingenuity and common sense instead of all the whining about what we can’t do could make a big difference.

      2. friends don’t risk infecting friends – work it out man – isn’t your religion about taking care of others? – gotta treat yourself as if you’re asymptomatic infected – it’s the only way to be sure you are doing your best to not harm others

    2. That’s your own perogative to stay home. Those who are in the “underlying conditions” group certainly should take their own precautions. That does not mean you need to force restrictions on every single person. Everyone else has as much of a chance from dying from this virus as the flu.

      1. Yep, it’s my right to stay home and your right not to. And I guess you also have the right to spread misinformation but it’s unethical to do so and says you have little or no integrity.

“Is COVID-19 more deadly than the flu?

It’s a lot more deadly, concludes a new study by the University of Washington published May 7 in the journal Health Affairs. The study’s results also project a grim future if the U.S. doesn’t put up a strong fight against the spread of the virus.“

But I’m sure that you have more knowledge than the experts….

            1. Um…. have you not yet realized that the diabetic, trumpanzee, hillbilly Borg have no interest or belief in ANYTHING that is not complimentary to dear leader!!! To the Borg you are part of the DEEP STATE and shall be assimilated!!!

        1. You’re the one spreading misinformation now. I clearly said those NOT in the underlying conditions group. Why don’t you go ahead and look that information up and then adjust the number much lower by accounting for those asymptomatic and/or those that never bother to get tested. Go educate yourself for once.

    3. Actually if you choose to stay at home and especially if you do not have any visitors nobody can pass anything to you. The key word here is “choose” which is related to “choice” as in “free choice” to decide how you want to live. We would prefer if we were all allowed that same “free choice” to decide.

    1. Hell you don’t care that you’re not told the truth by cnn or z21, you don’t care that kate brown has repeatedly violated her oath of office….but orangeman bad. Figures

      1. Gee and here I thought we were all servants to Trump…….”When somebody’s the President of the United States, the authority is total, and that’s the way it’s got to be,” Trump said

      2. So Ronald Reagan is a NIMROD as well. I recall he made “state’s rights a big deal in 1980.

Or maybe the founding fathers are NIMRODS as well:

10th Amendment of the US Constitution

The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people.

  4. Here’s the deal liberals, you stay in your basement with your diaper over your face and social distance like a zombie. We patriots will go outside and enjoy dining and socializing. Have you noticed the two states FL and TX death rates are so low compared to NY, NJ, MI, PA. They have similar population numbers, but FL and TX decided to start opening up? Please explain to me why OR is locked down and our death toll is less than 200?????????

    1. Oh and please explain why states run by democrats have the highest death rates in percentages? Because they are placing covid cases into nursing homes!

      1. Oh man population stats really are a mystery to you magas, no you cant get much meaningful data from comparing small urban states like nj to large rural ones like tx, what a waste of time… not to mention their populations are off by 20 million roughly, making in this case a 200% difference which isnt “similar” at all, despite your claim

    2. Florida son? Really? Are you talking about the state that stopped their medical examiners from reporting virus deaths?
      https://www.tampabay.com/news/health/2020/04/29/florida-medical-examiners-were-releasing-coronavirus-death-data-the-state-made-them-stop/
Or Texas where they’re testing like they went to the Trump School of Medicine.
      https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2020/05/cdc-and-states-are-misreporting-covid-19-test-data-pennsylvania-georgia-texas/611935/

    3. And what criteria are you using to determine that you’re a patriot? Patriots and heroes willingly sacrifice themselves for others and the greater good of their country. Sounds like you couldn’t care less for the vulnerable in your community much less your nation if you can’t even be bothered to make temporary easy sacrifices by eating takeout at home or wearing a mask. You’re not a patriot by a long shot. You fail the first requirement of being a compassionate human being.

  5. that seems pretty insulting to the character, and intellect of the faithful – is Trump saying that people’s faith is so shaky that it won’t sustain itself through a little inconvenience for a few months? He doesn’t have much regard for anyone, especially his followers

        1. Yes, it’s one of the ten commandments. Thou shalt not bare false witness. I speak the truth. You talk like an imbecile therefore you must be an imbecile.

    1. So the economy crashing, people losing their jobs, people having a hard time providing food for their family, increases in mental health stability, increases in suicide, increases in people dying from other causes due to having to put treatment on hold, increases in domestic violence
.etc… All of this is just an “inconvenience” to you?. WOW okay.

      1. Ummmm INCREASES in mental health stability would be a GOOD thing comrade, right
        ?
Ive said it before and i will say it again, the typos we see from the maga bots are often so achingly close and yet so clearly inaccurate, it seems increasingly unlikely they are made by native english speakers

      2. sure, that’s what i said – i was writing about the content of this story, but you knew that – that was a hell of a stretch – hope you didn’t pull a muscle – now you care about the plight of others? – what is your message? WOW, ok

  6. National and multi-national corporations were deemed “essential” and grabbed greater and greater shares of consumer dollars, while locally owned and operated businesses were deemed non-essential and had to close their doors. Big box stores appear to be packed, so I’m not sure why churches and other sites can’t be opened.

      1. Deflect his point much? It doesn’t matter whether brown actually used the words “essential” or “non-essential”. His point is still valid. There’s absolutely no reason everything couldn’t have remained open when big box stores that are packed were allowed to remain open.

        1. Shopping for essential household supplies doesnt involve singing or dancing or sharing food or sitting in large groups for hours (thankfully?)

          1. That doesn’t matter. The fact that ANY place can remain open like the stores makes it an INVALID argument to say churches can’t be open regardless of being “essential” or “non-essential”.

            1. But churches cant and dont operate like retail, you would need to remove the pews and keep everyone walking around the building perimeter the whole time, no singing or speaking in tongues
              ,
specifically church choirs have proven to be such a prominent infectious vector during these outbreaks that its made a lot of bat flu transmission research even possible, but as the neighbor of someone in a big church band, i would prefer the bat flu deniers think about the people around them too

Dont forget jesus closed the temple, he didnt kill the innocent to keep it open, gah!

          1. Barney you kind of shot yourself in the foot. That link specifically has a section that says “stay home except for ESSENTIAL needs” and it lists which businesses are “essential needs” so to speak and which ones aren’t.

Now the executive order itself does not specifically mention the closed businesses are “non-essential”…. It just says they are closed… But everyone knows especially as mentioned above, it basically means non-essential. The order also does say social gatherings are non-essential….i assume churches fall into that.

            1. well things have evolved since, and yeah, they just didn’t use it as shorthand. They had lots of judgment calls to make, sort of like… reporters. You can’t please everyone when you are trying to follow what public health officials say is needed to keep folks safe.

    1. Because churches are not tax revenue earners for the state….non-essential. Just like small mom-andpop business….their tax receipts are minuscule compared to big shopping

  7. “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

  8. The ONLY reason kate has them closed, is because churches don’t pay taxes. The weed and liquor stores are open because that’s the biggest tax revenue she has

  9. Imagine if President Trump had stepped in to over-ride Cuomo’s catastrophic decision to place more than 4,300 covid infected individuals into area nursing homes in New York

“It was the single dumbest decision anyone could make if they wanted to kill people,” Daniel Arbeeny said of the directive, which prompted him to pull his 88-year-old father out of a Brooklyn nursing home where more than 50 people have died. His father later died of COVID-19 at home.”

Imagine if President Trump was able to talk some sense into Democrat Governors nationwide as they fueled the flames of hysteria and panic- like out here in Oregon- when Kate Brown pulled the trigger on our economy over 5 deaths !

Millions of Oregonians would already be back at work- the state’s Wuhan Corona Virus flat-lined in March- so why are we still stumbling around not knowing what is open- what is closed- or where I can still pump my own gas- what a disaster !

  10. God must have come to him in a vision because he sure didn’t find it in a church since he never attends one (at least for worship). Could it be his attempt to attract voters??? Naw, we know he has the best interests of the citizens of this country at heart. But wait, does he even have a heart?? LOL

  11. The churches have to open up – the collection plates have been empty too long. Evidently, the Sunday Christians can only be forgiven their sins from the rest of the week if they congregate and pray collectively. God won’t accept individual prayers apparently – maybe too much paper work involved or maybe the sins are too big. But hey, social distancing or not, if they get infected, it will all be according to God’s plan, with a little bit of human stupidity thrown in.
