Eagle Crest man, 88, jailed on child pornography charges

Task force tip led to investigation, raid on home

REDMOND, Ore. (KTVZ) – A tip from a federal task force late last year led to a nearly six-month investigation and Wednesday’s arrest of an 88-year-old Eagle Crest resident accused of uploading child pornography over the internet, Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies said.

Sheriff’s detective began an investigation in December after receiving a tip from the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force regarding uploading of child pornography from a home in the county, Sgt. Jayson Janes said.

Detectives determined the images were uploaded from the home of Darwin Born, in the 1000 block of Golden Pheasant Drive in Eagle Crest, a resort community west of Redmond, Janes said.

In February, detectives served a search warrant at Born’s home and seized several electronic devices, also interviewing Born and other occupants of the home, the sergeant said.

The devices were later analyzed, and “numerous” photos of child sex abuse were found on a computer belonging to Born, Janes said.

Born was interviewed again Wednesday and later lodged in the county jail on one first-degree count and nine second-degree counts of encouraging child sex abuse. He was held on initial bail of $105,000, jail records showed.

Janes explained that first-degree charges of encouraging child sex abuse involve dissemination, while second-degree charges reflect possession of such images.

The Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force is a national network of 61 coordinated task forces representing over 4,500 federal, state and local law enforcement and prosecutorial agencies.

Janes said tips from the task force have resulted in four arrests by sheriff’s deputies over the past year charges of distributing and possessing child pornography.
