Two long-time downtown Bend businesses on the move

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- The Wall St. Bar and the Taj Palace, which have been in Bend's downtown for 20 years, will be moving to a new location soon.

The move is because of a lease dispute, according to the bar's owner, Dolly Miller.

Wall St. Bar has been in the historic building at 917 NW Wall Street for nearly 25 years. The Taj Palace, which shares the space with the bar, has been there for about 20 years.

"It's a lot of history here," bartender Chris Warlick said Tuesday.

Warlick has been a patron and occasional bartender of the bar for 15 years.

“If there’s not a place like Wall St. down here there’s really no reason to come (downtown), unless you’re going to a specialty shop or something else like that,” he said.

The bar and Taj Palace plan to make a move to the south side of Bend, but are not ready to announce just where yet.

“Nothing good lasts forever, but something good will come again," Daidre Streeter, a Wall St. regular told NewsChannel 21 Tuesday.

  1. Gee…maybe we’ll get another high price boutique or another cookie cutter brew pub or another posh art gallery. Just what we need as the Californication of Bend rolls along and takes out the old timers.

      1. me start asking questions?? ….what an odd thing for you to say. And on the subject of odd, why i there no Journalistic curiosity as to why two 20 year + establishments both decided to move at the same time over a ‘lease dispute’. ANd yes, it wou;d be easy

  2. Downtown started it’s death spiral when they paid a few hundred thousand for a parking study and hired a parking manager whose main goal is to make enough money to pay his bonus. Paid parking in the garage was a huge nail in the coffin. Next will be the total elimination of free parking. At that point there will be no reason for locals to set foot in the area.

    1. I couldn’t agree more! The parking manager is a liar and a spin doctor. Paid parking pays him a big salary. He could care less about the locals who live here or about the well being of downtown.

  3. Rents are going up. It’s hard for a restaurant/bar to make it downtown unless they cater to the rich and famous. Southside should be more affordable. I guess they will use the vacated space for an upscale boutique for the tourists.

  4. The Taj Palace has been empty for 20 years. Anyone ever wonder how they were able to keep the doors open with zero customers, for over 2 decades? Anyone? No?

  5. Years ago I used to love going downtown, grab lunch, browse the galleries. I could even afford to buy something at Robert’s once in a while. But I avoid downtown as much as possible now. The stores are too expensive, there are plenty of good places to eat elsewhere, the traffic and parking are ridiculous. I would go for Farmer’s Market, but after the first trip this year, I gave up. There’s no reason for locals to bother with downtown at this point, unless you have business with the City or County offices. It’s just not worth the hassle.
