RENO, Nev. (AP) — A longtime federal judge in Nevada who presided over cases ranging from U.S. environmental disputes to political corruption has died at age 80 after being struck by a vehicle near the federal courthouse in Reno. Larry Hicks was pronounced dead at a hospital Wednesday. Police say the driver cooperated with investigators. Impairments doesn’t appear to be a factor. Hicks was Washoe County district attorney in the 1970s — a job his son now holds. His caseload over the two decades sampled all slices of Nevada life, from conflicts over water rights and wild horses to crooked politicians, casino workers, championship boxers and Las Vegas entertainers. Federal prosecutors and defense attorneys alike say they respected his wisdom and integrity.
