Deadline Wednesday: Free business training for Central Oregon veterans, families

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Applications are open through Wednesday, Sept. 30, for Startup Training Resources to Inspire Veteran Entrepreneurship (STRIVE), a free eight-week business training program for military veterans and their family members.

The in-person program is designed to assist military-connected entrepreneurs in developing skills to create and sustain small businesses.

Offered in collaboration with Syracuse University's Institute for Veterans and Military Families, the program connects participants with regional business resources and education. Coursework takes place at Central Oregon Community College's Bend Campus and the Central Oregon Veteran's Ranch.

Following completion of the eight-week course, graduates receive ongoing support through COCC's Small Business Development Center and Syracuse University.

To qualify for the program, at least 50% of the business must be owned by a veteran, active-duty military service member, Reserve or Guard member or military spouse. Eligible participants include honorably discharged veterans, active-duty service members within one year of discharge, spouses and current or former members of the National Guard or Reserves.

The program is divided into three distinct phases. Phase one requires online pre-class assignments prior to group meetings. Phase two involves interactive classroom sessions meeting every Tuesday from 9 a.m. to noon, running from Oct. 6 through Nov. 24. Refreshments and a light breakfast are provided during the weekly sessions.

Classroom locations will alternate between facilities during the eight weeks. The opening session on Oct. 6, a pitch competition on Nov. 17 and the final class on Nov. 24 will take place on the COCC Bend Campus. The five remaining classes on Oct. 13, Oct. 20, Oct. 27, Nov. 3 and Nov. 10 will meet at the Central Oregon Veteran's Ranch, located between Bend and Redmond.

Participants competing in the “Pitch Your Idea” contest will vie for awards from a $6,500 cash pool. In Phase 3, participants are paired with mentors who possess industry experience and resources to support business launches and development.

Applications for the upcoming cohort must be submitted by Wednesday, Sept. 30. Selected applicants will receive notification of their acceptance on Thursday, Oct. 1.
