BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- A Texas man reported as missing by worried family members has been found in the Portland area, Deschutes County sheriff's deputies said Wednesday.

Detective Sgt. Jayson Janes said, 'The sheriff's office would like to thank the public for their assistance."

Earlier Wednesday, deputies updated the search information, saying a citizen had reported seeing a man fitting his description camping in Crook County late last week.

Deputies had asked the public for help Tuesday in finding Don Wayne Yates, 63, of Burleson, Texas, who was believed to be camping on U.S. Forest Service land north of Sisters but hasn't been reachable by family for two weeks.

Yates, 63, of Burleson, Texas, has not responded to a family member's attempts to call him since July 27, Lt. William Bailey said. Deputies searched areas north of Sisters and had not been able to locate him.

After Tuesday's announcement, a citizen called the sheriff's office to say he'd encountered a man he believed to be Yates who was camped in the area of U.S. Highway 26 and Forest Service Road 27 in Crook County, Janes said.

The citizen said he spoke with the man who had set up camp in that area last Friday evening but had left by Saturday morning, Janes said. He believed that he was Yates based on the photo made public, the kind of car he was driving and that he said he was from Texas.
