SW Bend fire displaces family of 5

An attic fire near a wood stove caused about $2,500 damage to a manufactured home in the Romaine Village area of southwest Bend early Monday, displacing a family of five on a very cold night, authorities said.

Bend Fire and Rescue responded shortly before 12:30 a.m. to the reported fire in the home of Salvador Amezuca at 61040 South Queens Drive, No. 229, said Capt. Kurt Solomon.

The first units to arrive found the homeowner had put out most of the blaze with a pan and water from the kitchen sink. Solomon said firefighters were able to quickly douse the remaining flames and overhaul the scene.

The fire captain said said the cause of the fire was under investigation.

An American Red Cross disaster action team responded to assist the family of three adults and two children. The agency said it provided translation services, comfort kits, lodging, food and clothing.

The home was found to not have any smoke detectors, Solomon said, reminding residents that working smoke detectors save lives.
