Two Central Oregon organizations collaborate in celebration and service on MLK Day
BEND, Ore. (KTVZ)-- Monday was Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a holiday that serves as a reminder to be of service to those around you. One of the best examples of this is the collaboration between two Central Oregon groups dedicated to supporting the region's youth. Heart of Oregon /Corps provides young adults with valuable job training and opportunities for community service. Mountain Star Family Relief Nursery focuses on supporting children with additional needs and preventing child abuse.
On Monday, Heart of Oregon went over to Mountain Star for a deep cleaning of all the classrooms. Teens and volunteers spent the day making sure the space that serves so many local children is safe and clean, while thinking about the meaning of MLK Day. Maria Rodriguez, a student in Heart of Oregon Corps, said, "Martin Luther King gave us something. So we want to give back to our community and just help around wherever we can."
While Heart of Oregon cleaned, kids and adults from Mountain Star put together art projects and cards to be donated to hospitals, shelters, and adult care homes.
