Woman Rescued After 3 Nights in Wilderness

A Portland woman missing for three nights in the Mount Hood Wilderness was found and rescued by helicopter Tuesday and was reported in serious condition at a Portland hospital.

A Legacy Emanuel Medical Center spokeswoman told The Oregonian ( http://bit.ly/oRO3xU ) that 28-year-old Pamela Salant of Portland was being held for evaluation.

Hood River County Sheriff Joe Wampler says an Oregon Army National Guard helicopter crew spotted her Tuesday afternoon along Lindsey Creek. Salant was about a mile from Bear Lake, where she got separated last Saturday from her boyfriend while they looked for a good campsite.

The sheriff says she waved at the helicopter crew. TV video showed the helicopter hovering over a steep, forested canyon. A hoist pulled a rescuer and Salant into the helicopter.

Salant was reported missing Sunday by her boyfriend, Aric Essig. She reportedly had no supplies with her.
