Semi jackknifes on icy Hwy. 20; driver cited

U.S. Highway 20W near Suttle Lake was blocked for 90 minutes Saturday morning after a semi-truck jackknifed across the highway. The driver was unhurt but was cited by Oregon State Police, who investigated the non-injury crash.

Around 7 a.m., a 2003 International truck pulling a semi-trailer driven by Hector Lopez Viay of Beaverton was westbound on the highway near milepost 85 when he lost control on the icy roadway, troopers said

The truck went off the westbound shoulder, struck a cement barrier and traveled across the eastbound lane into the guardrail. It came to an uncontrolled rest blocking both lanes.

OSP, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the Black Butte Police Department and ODOT responded to the scene.

The driver was cited by OSP for failure to drive within a lane. Senior Trooper Aaron Roth was the lead investigator.

Both lanes were blocked for 90 minutes before one lane was opened. All lanes were cleared about 10:30 a.m.

It was one of several slide-offs and crashes reported on the highway west of Sisters Saturday morning. There were no reports of serious injuries.
