Given favorable conditions, Deschutes National Forest fuel specialists on the Sisters Ranger District plan to conduct an approximately 160-acre prescribed fire beginning Thursday two miles north of Camp Sherman along the north side of Forest Road 1425 in the Metolius Basin.
Objectives of this prescribed fire include reducing hazardous fuels in a historically fire-adapted ecosystem and improving wildlife habitat, officials said.
Smoke from this operation could impact forest roads and areas north of Camp Sherman, including House on Metolius.
Signs will be posted in Camp Sherman and along Forest roads 12 and 1419. No road closures are anticipated with this project.
Fuels specialists will follow policies outlined in the Oregon Department of Forestry smoke management plan, which governs prescribed fires, and attempts to minimize impacts to visibility and public health.
