The Redmond City Council on Tuesday night accepted Mayor George Endicott’s appointment of Heather Carlin to fill a recent vacancy on the council.

The seat was vacated when former Councilor Ginny McPherson resigned in July.

“I have a genuinepassion and concern for the City Redmond,” Carlin said of her appointment. “I look forward to serving the community and contributing as a member of the Redmond City Council.

Carlin, a 17-year resident of Redmond, has previously served on the city’s Budget Committee and Planning Commission, and has led a number of Boards of Directors such as Saving Grace and Central Christian Schools, as well as being a Leadership Redmond graduate.

“After interviewing Ms. Carlin, it was evident that she has maintained an interest in city government and is familiar the role and responsibility of being a City Councilor,” Endicott said. “She expressed great enthusiasm for taking on this important position to move the city forward and I believe she will be a valuable addition.”

The appointment would be effective immediately and ends when the term expires December 31, 2016.

In other news, by a unanimous vote, the council approved the request from the Redmond Parks Committee to name the new 100% fully accessible playground currently under construction in Sam Johnson Park, Hope Playground.

The playground name will not replace Sam Johnson Park, but simply identifies the playground as ‘Hope Playground’ in Sam Johnson Park.

“As the mother of 2 young children, I joined the effort to make Sam Johnson Park a safe, exciting, and accessible play opportunity for all our city’s youth,” said Chelsea Dickens, of Friends of Sam Johnson Park.

“I never imagined the positive response the project would receive from Redmond City Council, staff, and the incredible support from the community that it inspired,” she added.

“Naming the new play area ‘Hope Playground’ reflects the spirit of the playground as a gathering place for all abilities. It is truly a place built by the community, for the community and that is something to be proud of.”

Custom metal entry signs designating the playground facility ‘Hope Playground – A Place for Everyone’ will be installed as construction is completed, promoting the ideology for which the playground was designed and built. The Sam Johnson Park Improvement Project is slated to be completed in October.
