Road Trip: Destination Maupin, where rafting rules

KTVZ

Good things come in small packages, and the town of Maupin is no exception.

It was founded by a man by the name of Howard Maupin in 1909. Maupin was known for killing Chief Paulina, the leader of a group of Northern Paiutes.

But Maupin is more than just a small town with a long history. It’s a family.

Amy Hazel is the owner of Deschutes Angler Fly Shop, and she says, “Knowing everyone in town is a great thing about Maupin. And there’s a little saying in Maupin that says, ‘If you don’t remember what you did last night , ask anybody in town, because they’ll know.'”

Maupin is a mecca for rafting and fishing alike. Every summer, the town swells to accommodate the 100 raft guides who call Maupin home for five months.

Along with the guides come thousands of tourists who travel from around the world to raft the Deschutes River.

But there’s much more to Maupin than just rafting. Derek Oldham, a guide for All Star Rafting, suggests checking out the Riverside Restaurant, as well as the Rainbow Tavern.

While Maupin might be small, it makes up for it in charm.

Also, if you do head to Maupin, make sure to stop by All Star Rafting and the Deschutes Angler Fly Shop:.
