Madras woman accidentally shot self in foot, deputies say

A call to Jefferson County 911 from the Juniper Motel on Monday morning shed little light on what was going on, other than shouting, but sheriff’s deputies called to the scene learned a woman had accidentally shot herself in the foot.

Patrol Sgt. Jason Erickson said the sheriff’s office got a call around 10:30 a.m. reporting a disturbance at the motel, at 414 Northwest Highway 26. A 911 call had been made, but dispatchers only heard yelling on the line and were unable to determine what was going on.

Deputies, assisted by Madras police and Oregon State Police, went to the scene to investigate, Erickson said. They found a 25-year-olde Madras woman, who they did not identify, in her car in the parking lot, and learned she was the victim of an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound to her right foot.

Deputies rendered first aid until Jefferson County EMS arrived to treat and take the woman to St. Charles Madras, where she was treated and released, Erickson said.

The investigation was completed and it was found to be an isolated incident, with no threat to the community or suspects at large, the sergeant said.

“The sheriff’s office would like to remind citizens to be careful when handling all firearms and obey all the cardinal rules of gun safety when carrying or handling firearms,” Erickson added in a news release.
