Fire heavily damages SW Redmond home

A fire that heavily damaged a southwest Redmond home Thursday night was caused by food accidentally left cooking on the stovetop while residents were away, officials said.

Firefighters were called to the home in the 3200 block of Southwest Obsidian Avenue shortly after 6 p.m., said Redmond Fire Battalion Chief Chris Simmons. Crews arrived to find the home filled with smoke and fire in the kitchen and living room areas, Simmons said. All of the occupants got out unhurt, with their pets.

Crews pulled a primary and backup hose line to the front door and attacked the fire, quickly knocking it down, the official said. Crews then checked the attic and found the fire had not extended there, though it was full of smoke, so crews ventilated the home and overhauled the scene.

The house and contents were heavily damaged by heat and smoke, Simmons said. The American Red Cross was contacted to help the displaced family with emergency needs.

Officials found the cause of the fire was food accidentally left cooking on the stove top while the residents were away.

Simmons said smoke detectors were not functioning when firefighters arrived. Simmons urged residents to make sure to check smoke detectors in your home.

Redmond police provided assistance with traffic control, he said.
