Looting and fighting reported in a central Sudan city as paramilitary group attacks military troops

CAIRO (AP) — Residents say fighters from Sudan’s notorious paramilitary group have looted homes and shops and taken over the main hospital in a central city, forcing tens of thousands to flee. The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces are fighting Sudan’s military troops for the control of Singa, the capital of Sennar province. Residents described RSF fighters in pickup trucks mounted with automatic rifles rampaging through Singa, looting homes and shops and and taking over the city’s main hospital. The paramilitary group has been repeatedly accused of gross rights violations across the country since the war started in April last year, when tensions between the military and the RSF exploded into open fighting.
