Crews end daylong search for 1887 Lee statue time capsule

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Crews have halted searching for the day for a time capsule from 1887 believed buried in the pedestal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee that once towered over Richmond. The workers were unable to locate the time capsule Thursday, a day after the statue was removed and taken away. Workers used ground-penetrating radar devices and a metal detector, working for more than 12 hours before stopping near nightfall. Gov. Ralph Northam’s chief of staff said crews would return Friday. The official said it is doubtful workers would resume looking for the time capsule, but he left open a small possibility.
