Northwest fire crews deploy to Colorado as major wildfires grow

Routt County

CENTRAL OREGON (KTVZ) -- Central Oregon fire crews are heading out of state to assist with a growing wildfire crisis in Colorado, where roughly eight fires are actively burning across the state.

Among them, the Aspen Acres Fire has become the seventh-largest wildfire in Colorado history, while the Ferris Fire is now ranked among the top 10 largest on record.

Northwest fire teams, including crews from our region, are being deployed to the Northern Rockies area, where the Fishhook Fire and Green Ridge Fire are actively burning near Steamboat Springs and the Stagecoach Reservoir in Routt County.

KTVZ is working to speak with representatives from the National Wildfire Coordinating Group’s Communication, Education, and Prevention Committee and the International Association of Fire Chiefs to better understand where local crews are being assigned, what their mission will be on the ground, and how agencies are approaching safety during this deployment.

KTVZ’s Tracee Tuesday will have a full report tonight during the 6 p.m. newscast on our NBC affiliate.
