Oregon agriculture trade mission to Japan to begin

KTVZ

Oregon Department of Agriculture Director Alexis Taylor is traveling to Japan on a joint trade mission with seven Oregon producers ready to feature their high-quality specialty products, including spirits, wine and natural foods.

The June 10-15 trip to Tokyo and Osaka is with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Western United States Agriculture Trade Association (WUSATA), and it includes delegations from 16 states and territories.

“Japan is Oregon’s top agricultural export market, with sales of more than $647 million in 2017,” says Taylor. “We have a long history of strong relationships with distributors and retailers in the country. Some Oregon producers have been exporting to Japan for several generations. During our trip, we will check in with our established partners and introduce some new products to a very refined Japanese market.”

Oregon exported more than $5 billion in agricultural products in 2017, making it the top economic driver in the state. Despite uncertainties in federal trade policies, ODA is committed to expanding trade and ensuring a healthy economy for Oregonians now and in the future.

While in Japan, the companies will have several business meetings to explore export opportunities with Japanese distributors and retailers.

“Japan became Oregon Wine’s first international market beyond North America; it is incredibly important to our success,” says Robert Morus, Oregon Wine Board director and winegrower. “I look forward to exploring how existing and additional Oregon brands can expand opportunities and sales in Asia.”

ODA is in the planning stages for two more trade missions this fall to Korea and Taiwan. Oregon producers interested in showcasing their products can contact ODA’s Agricultural Development and Marketing team at agmarket@oda.state.or.us or (503) 872-6600.
