Bend healthcare provider warns public about use of popular supplement Kratom
BEND, Ore. (KTVZ)-- A local healthcare provider is raising awareness about a herbal supplement that may actually be addictive. Kratom is a plant from Southeast Asia traditionally used for pain relief. While Kratom is not an opioid, it has a similar effect on the brain.
It's widely available at convenience stores and smoke shops. This week, the Attorney General of Florida banned a more concentrated version of kratom. Substance abuse therapists warn this drug could be just as habit forming as a hard drug.Â
Dr. David Campbell from Recover Together Bend told KTVZ News "The majority of our Kratom and 70H patients that come in for detoxification often state that they took this only for stress relief, pain, and relaxation. They did not know that it would cause these effects. They did not know that they would become addicted. They did not know that they would build tolerance and withdrawal because this is marketed as a legal substance and that's the problem."
If you've been using Kratom regularly and you're experiencing mood swings, anxiety, and irritability, you may be developing a chemical dependence. If you're concerned with your Kratom use, reach out to a therapist or healthcare professional.
