Deschutes DA launches public safety community survey

Deschutes County District Attorney John Hummel said Friday he’s launched an online community survey in an effort to better understand residents’ perceptions on crime and public safety.

The survey is part of a larger effort being spearheaded by the DA’s community-based advisory panel, DeschutesSafe, to analyze, assess and supplement current crime prevention programs.

An invitation to take the survey was mailed to 10,000 randomly selected households in Deschutes County. This methodology will allow the DA’s Office and their survey partner Portland State University to collect feedback from a representative sample of community members. Comparisons of public opinion across different cities within the county will also be possible.

“Community feedback is a very valuable part of our crime prevention efforts,” said Hummel. “This is just one of many tools that DeschutesSafe partners are using in our efforts to make Deschutes County an even safer place to live.”

DeschutesSafe plans to use the survey responses to help shape future crime prevention efforts. Later this fall, the District Attorney’s Office will be holding community meetings to discuss findings and to gather additional community feedback.
