Amtrak locomotive, cars derail near Steilacoom, Wash.

STEILACOOM, Wash. (AP) – A locomotive and several cars of an Amtrak passenger train derailed Sunday afternoon in Washington state’s Pierce County, causing several minor injuries, authorities said.

The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office said the waterfront derailment occurred near the town of Steilacoom, about 45 miles south of Seattle.

Four cars of the train, which was carrying 267 passengers, derailed around 2:30 p.m. near the Chambers Bay golf course, the site of the 2015 U.S. Open.

Amtrak said the railroad tracks reopened for service by early evening at limited speeds.

The company added in a statement that the passengers of the Cascades train that derailed were taken to Tacoma aboard five buses.

There was no word on the cause of the derailment.

The Amtrak Cascades train runs between Vancouver, Canada, and Eugene-Springfield, Oregon. 

The Gig Harbor Police Department said one of its patrol boats was helping environmental officials put in pollution-control booms to block fuel from the derailment from leaking into the nearby bay.
