Driver jailed in DUII crash into SW Bend home

A 34-year-old Bend man was arrested and jailed on DUII and other charges early Saturday after his speeding SUV ran through a yard and struck a tree, then ran into a home near McKay Park, injuring a passenger, police said.

Officers responded to 48 SW Allen Road shortly before 3:30 a.m. on a report that a car had struck a nearby home, said police Sgt. Kurt Koester.

A preliminary investigation indicated Russell Patrick Campbell was driving on Allen Road when he lost control of his 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser, Koester said.

His SUV damaged a yard and struck a tree at the Allen Road address before hitting a house at 136 SW Shevlin Hixon Drive, damaging the SUV and home, the sergeant said. A plumber later was on scene making repairs, as it appeared the car struck the home at the location of the laundry room.

“Both speed and alcohol appear to be a factor in this crash,” Koester said.

A passenger who police did not identify was taken by ambulance to St. Charles-Bend for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.

Campbell was taken to the Deschutes County Jail and lodged on charges of DUII, third-degree assault, reckless driving, five counts of recklessly endangering and two counts of second-degree criminal mischief. His bail was set at $25,000 pending a July 26 court date, according to jail records.

John Audia lives right next to the home that was struck. He said Campell tore up his yard he’d just put in, and also took out his tree before crashing into the nearby home.

Audia said he spoke with the passenger in the SUV after the crash, and he said Campbell had been flying through the streets at 80 to 90 mph.

“What if somebody was out on a run, or walking their dog early before work, and this person had killed someone?” Audia said. “So at least everyone was okay.”
