Thieves ‘paw’ axle off Bend animal shelter’s truck

The Humane Society of Central Oregon is having a tough time picking up donations for the thrift store it relies on, due to thieves who pulled off an unusual heist.

A week ago, the entire rear axle of one of the organization’s pickup trucks was stolen right off the truck.

Shelter officials told NewsChannel 21 on Saturday it will cost more than $1,000 to replace the axle.

Community Outreach Director Lynne Ouchida said more than 40 percent of the organization’s operating budget comes from its thrift store.

Ouchida said they truck is being checked out an auto company, and she’s waiting to find out if other parts also were ripped from the vehicle.

“It’s just really sad when people are actually stealing literally from money that could go to help homeless animals,” Ouchida said.

Ouchida said some people have already donated to help replace the axle.

You can contact the Humane Society of Central Oregon at 541-382-3537 if you would like to donate, or visit www.hsco.org.

Anyone with information on the theft is asked to call Bend police at 541- 322-2960. You can also call the Crime Stoppers Tip Line at 1-877-876-TIPS or visit the Crime Stoppers page at KTVZ.COM and use an online form. You can remain anonymous, and you could be eligible for a cash reward.
