Detroit man killed in Hwy. 22 crash east of Gates

A Detroit, Oregon man was killed Monday afternoon when his car crossed into the oncoming lane on state Highway 22E east of Gates, sideswiped one pickup and struck another, Oregon State Police reported.
OSP Capt. Tim Fox said an investigation showed Eric Ellis, 57, of Detroit was heading east at the wheel of a 2004 Honda Civic around 1:30 p.m. when he crossed into the westbound lane and sideswiped a 2012 Ford pickup, pulling a travel trailer and driven by a 48-year-old Dallas man.
The car continued on and hit a 2014 GMC pickup driven by a 41-year-old Oregon City man, Fox said.
Ellis sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. The other two drivers were unhurt, the captain said.
The crash and investigation closed Highway 22E for about 3 1/2 hours.
OSP was assisted at the scene by the Gates Rural Fire Protection District, ODOT, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and the Keizer Police Department.
