Online threat closes Lake County SD schools for 2nd day

While Central Oregon has seen a rash of online and other school threats prompting arrests and parental concern, another potential threat posted online over the weekend will keep all schools in the Lake County School District No. 7 closed for a second day Tuesday.

The school district, located in one of Oregon’s most remote areas, has about 750 students at five schools in a district covering about 1,900 square miles.

The first posting to the district’s Facebook page early Sunday stated, “A text message has been released posing threats to specific LCSD #7 students.”

The district said on its website that all district schools would be closed Monday “due to an ongoing investigation related to a potential threat posted online.”

“School administration, law enforcement and community partners are in close communication and are working collaboratively to resolve the situation as effectively and efficiently as possible,” the statement said, adding that “all school district facilities are closed to all extracurricular activities and community sports programs.”

Monday night, the district posted to the Facebook page that the schools would remain closed Tuesday “due to the ongoing investigation,” including ” all extracurricular activities, sporting events and practices. ”

Klamath Community College-Lake County also will be closed for a second day, the college stated in its own online posting.

Last Tuesday, Lakeview High/Daly Middle School Principal Lane Stratton posted that “a situation arose where students behavior escalated to a point” where staff ” made the decision to put the school into lockout, ” as did in-town elementary schools and the school district office. Once the concern was resolved, he said, the lockout ended less than an hour later. There was no word Monday whether that incident was related to the later threat.
