Bend Cub Scout Troop 18, friends and families watch their cars fly down the track at the annual Pinewood Derby

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Nerves and adrenaline were high on Saturday for Bend Cub Scout Pack 18's third Annual Pinewood Derby. Cars were barreling down the track for all the families and Scouts to see.

I asked Scout member Dominic Wilson, "What did you do to your car to make it fast for today?"

"I kind of made the front the shape of a bullet," he said.

The event was held at the Nativity Lutheran Church, where about 20 Cub Scouts along with their families gathered to see their cars fly by!

Cubmaster Robert Doughman said, "The purpose of this event is really kind of around sportsmanship for the packs, teaching the kids how to react in life for winning and losing."

It was to also give the Scouts the skills to get to design, build and paint their cars, and to be exposed to hand tools.

Every grade from kindergarten to fourth grade is broken out into a den. Kindergartners are known as the Lions, Tigers are first-graders and second-graders are Wolves and Bears are in third grade, along with Webelos. 

For some Cub Scouts, the medal is the highlight. 

I asked another Scout, Tucker O'Neal, "What was your favorite part about today?"

He said, "Winning the medal!"

First place! What was his strategy?

"Um, we just put a lot of ... putty in the back."

You got to root for your car in the sibling race and adult races. 

Doughman said, "For me, I think what I have enjoyed the most is just seeing the kid's face light up, whether we're doing Pinewood Derby or some crafts, or we're telling stories, or going camping."

Families and Sub Scouts had a blast designing their cars, and rooting for theirs to win.
