Rainy and gusty this afternoon, a breezy and wet weekend expected

Bend, OR (KTVZ) -

Rain and mountain snow will be fueled by an Atmospheric River this weekend. Heavy rain is expected in the Valley, mountain snow will be heavy at times, and Central Oregon will even receive decent rainfall totals and a chance for the first snow of the season for many.

Rain is expected to start falling between 3-6pm this afternoon as a cold front approaches. This is the first front in a series of fronts passing through this weekend. This front will contribute to gusty winds. A Wind Advisory is in place for the second half of the day. Winds will gust between 30-40mph but could reach near 50mph. Secure any loose objects outdoors. These winds could cause very localized damage to tree branches which could cause a power outage, but it isn't highly likely. We are issuing a Local Alert Weather Day today due to the wind. It won't be a crazy storm, but the first of the season.

Rain will continue into the night. A stray shower is possible early Saturday but the next system approaches around lunchtime and will bring another round of gusty winds and rain. Mountain snow will begin accumulating and a wintry mix is possible in the high desert. It is possible we see the NWS release another Wind Advisory for this day.

The third wave happens Sunday. Snow is possible for areas south of Bend. I‘m not anticipating a lot to accumulate but between 0-2” is possible on grassy or raised surfaces. Look for the mountains to pick up around 8-12” of snow, with the passes receiving between 4-7”.

A Winter Weather Advisory will be active from Saturday night until 2am Monday morning for the Cascades, eastern slopes, and areas south of Bend above 4500ft. A Local Alert Weather Day has been issued Sunday due to the first snow for many and poor travel conditions.

Temperatures today are in the 60s but will progressively cool through the weekend. Highs will be in the 40s by Sunday.

Happy Friday. Have a safe weekend.
