One Class at a Time: How COCC’s fire science program shapes future firefighters
BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- A Central Oregon Community College program that helps train the next generation of firefighters just received a boost through KTVZ's “One Class at a Time” initiative. With support from Mid Oregon Credit Union, the program is being awarded $1,000 to enhance its hands-on learning resources.
The college’s Fire Science Program serves as a starting point for many local and wildland firefighters. While classroom learning remains important, the heart of the program lies in immersive, realistic training sessions that use the same tools and equipment professionals rely on in the field.
“There's only so much that we can simulate in fire service education,” said Fire Science Program Director Ryan Gregor. “We require all of the same tools that you’d find on any fire engine driving around town. This donation will help us purchase the kinds of tools students will actually use throughout their careers.”
The funding will go toward a firefighter’s axe and a specialized pry bar known as a Halligan bar—essential equipment for emergency response work. Currently, classes are held in a repurposed dormitory on COCC’s campus, where students train through a variety of real-life simulation exercises.
In the long term, the program hopes to secure funding for a dedicated fire training facility on campus, expanding opportunities for advanced, real-world instruction.
The “One Class at a Time” program spotlights and supports exceptional educators and classroom initiatives throughout Central Oregon, providing meaningful resources that help local schools and colleges strengthen their impact on students and the community.
