C.O. Master Gardeners plan community garden lotteries

KTVZ

The Central Oregon chapter of OSU Master Gardeners ™ will allocate plots in the community gardens they manage in Bend by a lottery system in 2018.

Returning gardeners from last season have the first option to rent the same plot again this year. Those who want to switch to a different plot, or who did not have a plot last year, need to enter the lottery for available garden plots. The procedures to enter the lotteries at Hollinshead Community Garden on the east side of Bend and Northwest Crossing Community Garden on the west side differ. The deadline to register for either garden lottery is 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 14.

For Hollinshead Community Garden:

Visit gocomga.com and select “Register Here” from the top navigation bar to view full instructions to register for the lottery. Winners in the lottery will be drawn on April 15. Winners will be notified within three days after the drawing and will receive maps showing available plots. Plot selection will be conducted on Sunday, April 22, promptly at 12 p.m. Each winner, or his designee, must be at Hollinshead in person to select a plot. The garden will open at 11:30 a.m. to enable winners to inspect the plots available. Rental fees are $30 for a 10 foot by 10 foot plot or $40 for a 10 foot by 15 foot plot. Cash or check only. Gardeners who registered for the lottery but did not win a plot will be kept on a waiting list and notified if openings occur during the season.

For Northwest Crossing Community Garden:

Send your full name, phone number and e-mail address to one of the garden coordinators: Tina Burnside at tinaburnside@bendcable.com. The drawing for plots will be held on April 15 and Master Gardeners will assign available plots to the lottery winners. Those who registered for the lottery but did not win a plot will be kept on a waiting list and notified if a space opens up during the season. Plot holders are expected to contribute two hours of volunteer service on the Opening Day April 28 and two hours on the Closing Day on Oct. 13.

Plots at the Northwest Crossing Community Garden are 4 feet by 9 feet. Rental fees for the season are $30, or $25 for seniors 65 and over; cash or check only.
