‘Bonnie, Clyde wannabees’ led deputies on chase in stolen car with 4 chickens inside, deputies say

    LAURENS COUNTY, South Carolina (WYFF) — A man and woman that authorities in Laurens County, South Carolina, called “Bonnie and Clyde wannabees” were arrested after leading deputies on a chase in a stolen car that had a dog, cat and four chickens inside.

This started about 9 a.m. Monday in the area of South Frontage Road and Cook Road in Gray Court.

Authorities said while deputies were on routine patrol, they saw a black Honda sedan with an expired tag traveling at inconsistent rates of speed and having trouble maintaining lanes.

Deputies said they tried to stop the car, but the driver refused, and a chase started. They said once the chase went into Greenville County, a decision was made to terminate the pursuit.

At about 2:45 p.m. Monday, the same vehicle, which has been spray painted white, was spotted driving recklessly in the area of Bull Hill Road and another traffic stop was attempted, deputies said.

They said the driver refused to stop, and due to the time and school traffic, the pursuit was terminated briefly for safety reasons.

The chase began again on Highway 14 in the direction of Interstate 385, where authorities say the driver passed cars unlawfully and recklessly.

The vehicle was successfully disabled on I-385. Authorities said one dog, one cat, and four chickens were all inside the vehicle during the chase.

The driver, Joshua Harvey, and passenger, Rosie Smith, were arrested and charged.

Harvey was charged with failure to stop, operating with an expired registration, no proof of insurance, unlawful operation of a vehicle and unsecured load.

Smith was charged with failure to stop, DUI, ill treatment of animals, unlawful operation of a vehicle, operating with expired registration and seatbelt violation.

“These Bonnie and Clyde wannabees have tried to make fleeing from law enforcement a habit, but eventually, your luck runs out,” Laurens County Sheriff Don Reynolds said. “I want to thank the deputies involved for their work to put these two behind bars and I am thankful for a safe conclusion.”
