BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Statewide active transportation nonprofit Commute Options is pleased to announce Brian Potwin as their new executive director, effective on Saturday.

Potwin, who already has over a decade working for Commute Options under his belt, moves into the new role after a 3-month, nationwide search.

“I look forward to reinvigorating our organization with new energy and staff to help our programs grow, while running smoothly and efficiently,” says Potwin.

Potwin began his tenure at Commute Options in 2007 as a Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Education Volunteer and later went on to lead the program. He helped develop the Bicycle Diversion program alongside the Bend Police Department and pioneered the Bend Open Streets and Walking School Bus (WSB) initiatives. Potwin has held the role of Deputy Director since October of this year.

“Brian is the consummate Commute Options believer, employee, and leader,” says Commute Options Board Chair Gregg Morris. “The Board looks forward to seeing Brian’s enthusiastic leadership style steer our nonprofit into the next decade.”

Potwin takes over for Jeff Monson, the longtime Executive Director who recently retired. Potwin seeks to continue Commute Options’ financial and program growth. Commute Options currently runs the SRTS and WSB programs for children, and the Get There Oregon, Commute Options Partners, and Oregon Friendly Driver programs for adults. In addition, the nonprofit holds special events and programs targeting active transportation users throughout the year.

Commute Options promotes choices that reduce the impacts of driving alone. Through active transportation choice, Commute Options encourages healthy individuals, a clean environment, and a strong economy. Commute Options represents transportation options in our community by educating citizens, businesses and government about the value of carpooling, vanpooling, walking, bicycling, teleworking and using public transportation. www.commuteoptions.org
