Discounted or free phone, internet service available for eligible Oregonians

SALEM, Ore. (KTVZ) -- At a time when many Oregonians are impacted by the recent wildfires and the COVID-19 pandemic, the Oregon Public Utility Commission is promoting Oregon Lifeline.

A federal and state government program, Oregon Lifeline provides discounted phone or high-speed internet service to qualifying low-income households. Oregon Lifeline is currently offering a monthly discount up to $21.75 through December, a $9 increase over the usual discount. Oregon Lifeline also offers free cell phone and data service from Access Wireless, Assurance Wireless, or enTouch Wireless.

“We want to encourage all eligible Oregonians to take advantage of Oregon Lifeline services,” said Megan Decker, PUC chair. “This program helps eligible residents stay connected and provides access to local emergency services, jobs, health care, education and other vital resources. For some, Lifeline can mean the difference between having a social connection and complete isolation.”

Oregonians receiving benefits from select public assistance programs such as Medicaid or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) may qualify for Oregon Lifeline, which is limited to one person per household for either the discounted or free service.
