The Power of Place: Deschutes Historical Museum celebrates National Preservation Month with several May events

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- This May, for National Preservation Month, we’re celebrating the power of place—and the countless ways, big and small, that preservation strengthens communities, breathes new life into neighborhoods, supports a healthier planet, and builds a more just and connected society.

Here are some event highlights –

Friday May 2nd – Power of Place Kick-off Event in Downtown Bend during First Friday Art Walk, 5-7 pm

Come learn about preservation strategies and success stories. Test your knowledge of Bend’s historic structures with a fun facts and places game. Prizes available. 

Wednesday May 14th – Firsts of Crook County, 6:00pm

Join historian Steve Lent for a fascinating look at the "firsts" that shaped Crook County at the Bowman Museum in Prineville.

Thursday May 15th – Roots of Strength: A Journey Through Black History in Central Oregon, 4:00 pm

The new Redmond Public Library hosts a family friendly, interactive, and educational celebration of the 100th year anniversary of the Bend Colored Men’s Business Club.

Saturday May 17th - Redmond Preservation Day

Tour of Redmond City Hall and Historic Downtown, workshops on windows, paint, siding. Ridgeview High School students available to record oral histories at the new Redmond Public Library.

Tuesday May 27th - History Pub: Big Red and Other Preservation Tales, 7:00pm

Join Deschutes Historical Museum’s Executive Director Kelly Cannon-Miller to learn about the dramatic tale of the Crane Shed, nicknamed Big Red, and other historic buildings saved and lost to Bend’s past at McMenamins Old St. Francis.
