Brit Awards 2024: See who took home the top prizes
(CNN) — The Brit Awards – the top prize in music in the United Kingdom – unfolded in London on Saturday, and some of the biggest names from pop to rock from around the world are hoping to walk away with a statuette or three.
The night belonged to English singer-songwriter RAYE, who led the contenders with the most nominations ever at the Brits, with seven. She nearly swept in all her categories, nabbing five Brits including best new artist, artist of the year, song of the year and album of the year. At one point, the “Escapism” singer brought her grandmother up on stage to accept one of her multiple statuettes. She also had already won the songwriter of the year award ahead of the ceremony – a first for a female-identifying songwriter.
Before hitting the mainstream as a solo act, RAYE worked behind the scenes in music, as a songwriter and in production for major artists such as Beyoncé, Rihanna, John Legend, Ellie Goulding and David Guetta. Her debut album “My 21st Century Blues” earned high praise last year, after her 2022 single “Escapism” featuring 070 Shake went viral on TikTok.
Another special attendee at the Brits this year was Kylie Minogue, who received the coveted global icon award and performed a medley of her hits to close the show.
Along with RAYE, the artist of the year nominees included Dua Lipa, Arlo Parks, Jessie Ware, Little Simz and Olivia Dean, marking a significant improvement from last year’s crop of contenders, which didn’t include a singe female-identifying act.
In the best new artist category, RAYE was joined by Mahalia, Olivia Dean, PinkPantheress and Yussef Dayes.
The Brit Awards event, taking place at the O2 Arena in London, is being hosted by Maya Jama, Roman Kemp and Clara Amfo. Announced performers set to take the stage include Dua Lipa, Minogue, RAYE, Tate McRae, Jungle and more.
