Meta lays off 600 employees in older AI divisions

CALIFORNIA (KTVZ) -- Hundreds of workers at Meta are losing their jobs, despite the company’s massive push into artificial intelligence.

A Meta spokesperson told CNBC on Wednesday the company is cutting about 600 positions in its AI teams. The layoffs come four months after Meta appointed its first Chief AI Officer, Alexander Wang, and launched a new advanced research division known as TBD Labs.

That new unit was part of Meta’s more than $14 billion investment in AI technology — including several high-profile hires made earlier this year. None of those newer employees are being affected by the cuts.

Instead, the layoffs target staff from Meta’s older AI groups, as the company continues to reorganize around its latest AI strategy.
