‘Person Of Interest’ Confirmed In Hit-And-Run

District Attorney Patrick Flaherty stopped short Tuesday of calling 37-year-old Bret Lee Biedsheid a suspect but did confirm he is a person of interest in January’s hit-and-run that killed 48-year-old Anthony Martin of Bend.

Martin was killed walking his bike across Third Street in Bend near Revere Avenue.

Flaherty says they can’t move forward until all evidence is analyzed.

“We are waiting for results from forensic tests to determine whether to move this to a grand jury investigation,” Flaherty said Tuesday.

We visited Biedscheid’s home in southwest Bend Tuesday, but again no one answered.

Several neighbors said detectives came by last week, asking if they had seen the pickup investigators believe may have been involved in the hit-and-run.

Biedsheid is the director of accounting at the Les Schwab Headquarters and is on the board of directors for Bend’s KIDS Center.

Flaherty says they are taking time to evaluate evidence and not jumping to conclusions.

“There are many incidents where we investigate a person and they turn out to be completely innocent,” Flaherty said.

Bend Police Lt. Ben Gregory would only say, “This is an ongoing investigation. As soon as our department can draw conclusions, we will be in touch.”

While the victim’s family waits for justice, Flaherty says the answers they are searching for could come sooner than later.

“I believe all the forensic tests will be complete in about two weeks,” Flaherty told NewsChannel 21.

Once the police investigation is over, Flaherty said they will determine if the case is appropriate for a grand jury, given the evidence collected.
