Classic ‘Cruz’ Finale: Car Olympics

Saturday, Drake Park turned into a sea of classic cars for the 26th annual “Flashback Cruz — but the fun didn’t end there.

Dozens of classic cars, mostly Chevys, took a “cruz” Sunday from Drake Park all the way up to Mt. Bachelor.

Bikers, drivers and pedestrians stopped to wave at the passing antique cars.

What waited at the the top — the 2011 Car Olympics — and you won’t believe the prop used in the games — potatoes.

Drivers had to maneuver through obstacles courses, dropping spuds in buckets, being blindfolded and navigated over potatoes to smash them — even using a stick the push the potato along while driving.

Owners of these classic cars say they look forward to the Car Olympics every year.

“The games that they have, they’re not the typical type games that you see in a lot of the runs and stuff like that. But they’re pretty unique, a lot of fun. And we like to drive the cars, so we like to go to these things,” said Don Guida, owner of a 1957 Chevy.

The top finishers in Sunday’s Car Olympics walked away with some special prizes and cash rewards.

Then they all took the lifts up Mt. Bachelor to have a special “Flashback Cruz” luncheon at the Pine Marten Lodge.
