Bend Police K-9 Nabs Driver Who Ran, Hid
A brief police chase on Bend?s Eastside early Wednesday ended when the driver stopped, got out and ran. But a police dog found the man hiding in the backyard of a nearby home, officers said.
Jason Daryl Walter, 36, of Bend, was arrested on numerous charges, including methamphetamine possession and a probation violation. The latter meant he?s held without bail at the Deschutes County Jail in Bend.
The pursuit began shortly before 1 a.m., when an officer tried to stop a black Audi car for several traffic violations near the intersection of NE Fourth Street and Franklin Avenue, said Sgt. Devin Lewis.
The driver failed to yield to the officer?s lights and siren and sped off, starting to make ?obvious attempts to avoid being pulled over,? Lewis said in a news release.
As other police, Deschutes County sheriff?s deputies and Oregon State Police troopers responded to assist in the pursuit, the driver pulled into a dead-end area of SE Woodland Avenue and Logsden Street, got out and ran off, Lewis said.
A Bend police K-9, Haras, was in the area and was deployed to try to find and apprehend the driver.
Lewis said Walter was found by Haras, hiding in the backyard of a home on SE Centennial Boulevard. After he was arrested, he also was found to be in possession of methamphetamine, the sergeant said.
Other charges against Walter include felony and misdemeanor counts of attempt to elude, reckless endangering and a misdemeanor charge of driving with a suspended license.
