Bids In on Removing Tsunami Dock

KTVZ

The bids are in for removing a dock that floated from Japan to an Oregon beach after being set adrift by last year’s tsunami.

The Oregon Department of Parks and Recreation said Thursday the lowest bids are for breaking down the dock and hauling it off. They range from $79,922 to $84,496.50, with one for $240,000.

Towing the dock off the beach into the boat basin at Newport would cost between $128,702 and $175,271.20.

Officials have said price will be a big factor in the decision next week, because the state will have to pay the bill.

Since washing ashore last week, the dock has become a tourist attraction, prompting some people to suggest leaving it on the beach. But the state has said it will remove it.
