Bend man jailed in wild home invasion

A Bend man who allegedly broke into a northeast Bend home early Tuesday, punched a sleeping visitor in the face, then forced his way into a bathroom where two women were hiding was arrested early Tuesday after being bitten by a police dog and Tasered by police, officers said.

Cody Scott Hammond, 29, apparently was under the influence of illegal stimulants when he committed the home-invasion burglary and also broke into several cars in the area, said Sgt. Ron Taylor. He also said neither women knew Hammond and he’s never been associated with the address, in the 63000 block of Fairey Court.

Around 5:50 a.m., a 47-year-old Arroyo Grande, Calif. woman called Deschutes County 911 dispatchers to report a man had forced his way into the home of a 32-year-old Bend woman she was visiting, Taylor said.

Hammond then entered the bedroom where the visitor was sleeping and punched her in the face, causing injury, the sergeant said.

The two women then locked themselves inside a bathroom and called 911, Taylor said, adding that arriving officers could still hear Hammond inside the two-story home.

As officers prepared to deploy a police K-9, the woman who called 911 said Hammond had forced his way into the bathroom.

At that point, officers entered the home, confronting Hammond in an upstairs bedroom that adjoins the bathroom where the two women were hiding, Taylor said.

The intruder refused to comply with officers’ orders and was bitten by police K-9 Haras on the left elbow, Taylor said. He still refused to comply and was subdued by use of a Taser.

Officers investigating the incident learned Hammond allegedly also was responsible for several car break-ins in the area, located north of Empire Boulevard, between Boyd Acres Road and the Bend Parkway, Taylor said.

Hammond first was taken to St. Charles Medical Center-Bend for treatment of non life-threatening injuries, then to the county jail, where he was held on charges of first-degree burglary, fourth-degree assault, two counts of menacing, resisting arrest, third-degree criminal mischief and a parole violation, the latter meaning he’s held without bail.

The two women were evaluated at the scene by Bend Fire paramedics. The homeowner had non-life-threatening injuries and did not need to go to the hospital, Taylor said.

Taylor said the investigation was continuing, with more charges expected in regards to the vehicle break-ins. Police asked anyone who was a victim of a crime in the area, regardless of whether items were stolen or not, to report the crime by calling (541) 693-6911.
