Friends and family gather to remember Shane Munoz
About 100 friends and family of Bend resident Shane Munoz, who was shot and killed during an alleged burglary last Sunday, gathered at Drake Park for a candlelight vigil in his memory Thursday night.
As the sun set on the Deschutes River, candles began to light up the night.
“We knew a bunch of people would show up.” said Heather Murphy, a friend of Munoz. “I mean, this whole town is grieving for him, because he was something. We really really miss him.”
Friends say he was a loving father who would do anything for his young son.
Signs were placed on a cement wall that read, “Justice for Shane,” and “We are Shane’s voice.”
Despite what police have said — and that’s little, so far — several of Munoz’s friends tell us they believe there are more facts to the case that have not been revealed.
All police have said so far is that they responded to a report of a burglary in progress. Officers said homeowner Kevin Perry and a female companion returned to Perry’s home on Awbrey Road early Sunday to find someone had forced their way in, went inside and encountered Munoz, leading to an altercation involving all three people, during which Perry fatally shot Munoz.
“It’s a shame the one person who could give a voice to what happened is not here to provide that,” said Murphy. “We just hope that everyone will do everything in their power to bring justice to Shane, because we really believe he is innocent.”
“I just hope everything works out right for his family,” said Erick Kral, who said he was Munoz’s good friend. “They deserve all the support that we are all giving them and much more. There are no words for it.”
Bend police are continuing to investigate the case. No new details have been released and no arrests have been made.
