Scooters take over Redmond Skate Park

The sport of scootering is growing immensely worldwide and right here in Central Oregon there is a big following. A pro scooter competition in Redmond showed it.

Trinity Bikes, a bike shop in Redmond, put on a first time pro scooter competition Saturday at the Redmond Skate Park.

The event was open from beginners all the way up to professionals.

Kids can progress quickly at it, and some of the tricks they are doing are not easy.

Cory Van Lew and Stan Smirnoff, a couple of scooter pros,, were there to show that scooters aren’t just for kids.

“Not for kids at all — these are big toys.” said Smirnoff, who held up his scooter.

“I’ve been doing this for eight years,” Van Lew said. “Riding the streets is what i do, traveling the world now. It’s so big now everywhere — Europe, Australia, all over the place. And I just can’t wait to see if we can get into the X Games and get bigger with our sport.”

Trinity Bikes owner Eric Helie says Oregon is a big market for scooters.

Prizes were awarded to the top three in each division, and everyone else got some free goodies.
