COCC instructor wins teaching award
Andria Woodell, associate professor of psychology at Central Oregon Community College, won first place for her submission to the 2012 Teaching Resources Award, which was sponsored by the American Psychological Association Education Directorate and PT@CC.
The submission, “In-depth Investigation of a Case Study: CSI Bend,” is a project that Woodell designed for her Psychology of Violence and Aggression course that examines the physiological, psychological and sociological mechanisms that interact to create violent behavior.
“By framing this project as a criminal investigation, students often do not realize they are essentially writing research papers,” said Woodell. “The project is gaining popularity due to past students’ excitement, and new students are eager to start the cases.”
The Teaching Resources Award aims to encourage sharing of instructional techniques that community college faculty have developed and used in face-to-face, hybrid, or online psychology classes.
The committee seeks submissions for teaching activities, resources, presentation slides, or other materials along with a brief description of the teaching resource, what class it is used in, what topic is covered and evidence of its effectiveness.
