Bend fugitive arrested in Valley SWAT incident

An Oregon State Police SWAT unit peacefully talked a Central Oregon fugitive out of a rural Newberg home Wednesday afternoon, one day after he allegedly fled a traffic stop in the area and ran into the woods.

Ryan David Crossley, 44, had been sought by Newberg-Dundee police since Tuesday night, according to the McMinnville News-Register.

Crossley was charged with one count each of attempt to elude a police officer on foot and interfering with a police officer, in addition to a Deschutes County hold. Bail was set at $60,000.

Capt. Chris Bolek said that around 7 p.m. Tuesday a Newberg-Dundee officer attempted to stop the driver of a 1996 Infinti. The driver, later identified as Crossley, abruptly stopped, jumped out and ran into a wooded area.

Officers, assisted by the Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office, OSP and a Hillsboro Police Department K-9 team, searched the area for about three hours without locating the suspect.

The investigation determined Crossley was wanted out of Deschutes County on drug and property crimes, in addition to attempted assault on a public safety officer and resisting arrest.

Officers learned where he was staying, and at about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, they went to the home and tried to contact Crossley. After two women and a child were removed from the home, he was contacted via loudspeaker by officers who learned firearms were in the home.

As a result, the SWAT unit was requested. He was talked out of the home about 5:30 p.m. and was taken into custody without further incident.

A year ago, Central Oregon Drug Enforcement Team detectives arrested Crossley at a downtown Bend street corner, found to have a small amount of heroin, some other drugs and a concealed dagger in his possession.

He also was facing previous aggravated theft and burglary charges, and CODE team officials said at the time that he was involved in street-level drug trafficking.
