USFS issues Kapka Butte sno-park decision
The Bend-Ft. Rock Ranger District of the Deschutes National Forest issued its final decision Tuesday on the development of a new sno-park at Kapka Butte near the Cascade Lakes Highway.
The decision allows the development of a sno-park near the intersection of Forest Service Road 45 (connection between Sunriver and Cascade Lakes Highway) and Forest Service Road 46 (Cascade Lakes Highway).
The sno-park will provide 70 parking spaces and two restrooms. It will offer recreation opportunities to both motorized and non-motorized users by providing connections to both snowmobile and Nordic ski trails.
“Kapka Butte’s central location gives recreationists the opportunity to spread across a variety of trails throughout the Cascade Lakes area. In addition, its higher elevation allows for longest season of use of any sno-park other than Dutchman Flat,” said Kevin Larkin, Bend-Ft. Rock District Ranger.
Funding for the project is coming from a Federal Highway Administration (FHA) Forest Highway Enhancement Project Grant ($461,000). The grant funding was received through a competitive process.
The Deschutes National Forest’s success in getting the grant funding will help meet the needs of local and visiting recreationists and support local businesses and jobs, the agency said.
