Oregon State Police, aided by Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies and Bend police, arrested a 33-year old Bend man early Monday morning after he tried to elude officers by car, then crashed and tried to run on the south end of town, troopers said.

Around 1:20 a.m., an OSP trooper tried to pull over a 2006 Volkswagen GTI on Highway 97 near Pinebrook Boulevard for an unspecified traffic violation, troopers said.

The driver failed to yield, heading west on Pinebrook Boulevard and south on Brookswood Boulevard at a high rate of speed, said OSP Lt. Gregg Hastings.

The car soon left the road and struck a tree, prompting the driver to get out and run. He only got a short distance before he was caught by officers on the northwest corner of Brookswood Boulevard and Larkwood Drive.

The man, identified as Nicholas Steven Klampe, was checked by paramedics and not taken to the hospital. Officers searched the area where Klampe ran from the car and found a small amount of methamphetamine they believe he’d tossed to the ground.

Klampe was booked into the Deschutes County Jail on a felony charge of attempting to elude in a vehicle, a misdemeanor charge of attempting to elude on foot, DUII (alcohol) and meth possession.

A jail officer said he was released to a responsible third party shortly after 5 a.m.
