Jefferson County Fire District crews stopped a fire at a vacant Madras home from making it to the interior Friday evening, limiting damage to about $5,000, officials said Saturday.

The fire at 425 SW G Street was called in by a passer-by shortly before 6 p.m.. Two engines and five firefighters responded and were able to douse the blaze before it extended into the home, which was built in 1964, said Assistant Chief Tom Jaca.

The fire caused an estimated $5,000 in damage to the home, which was valued overall at $35,000, Jaca said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation
